 Home Help for Hispanic Mothers

HHHM Logo

WE BEGAN...in 1988 when a small group of concerned individuals desired to assist Hispanic women with limited income who lead subservient and isolated lives in Tehama County. At that time there were programs for children and opportunities for husbands to learn English, socialize, and acquire job skills. However, there were no programs to assist mothers to grow and to survive in American society. A lack of public transportation combined with isolated housing and an inability to speak English increased their alienation.

Thanks to a grant from the Sisters of Mercy, a part-time bilingual woman called a Mercy Visitor was hired to work directly with poor mothers needing assistance. Volunteers joined the organization in various capacities. Other funds were obtained and eventually ESL classes were started in the homes of women unable to attend classes offered by other agencies.
