Second Time Around Volunteer Services Adopt-A-Family Vehicle Donation Program
NVCSS Housing Programs in Shasta and Butte Counties include the following affordable housing projects:
  • Pine Street Place, Redding, is a transitional housing residence for homeless families and individuals.
  • Center Street Apartments, Redding, provides affordable housing for low-income families.
  • Wilshire Place, Redding, is 17 units of affordable housing for developmentally disabled adults.
  • Hartford Place (under development), Chico, a 21-unit housing facility for developmentally disabled adults.
  • Senior Housing Program, Redding, for frail elderly who have been discharged from the hospital.
  • Housing Counseling Program, Redding, serves first-time home buyers and existing home owners with pre-purchase and foreclosure prevention counseling.
  • Housing Specialist Services, Redding, provides advice and counseling to increase housing opportunities for the developmentally disabled.

Counseling services are provided to adults, children, and families for a variety of concerns including the following:
  • Depression
  • Marital Conflict
  • Sexual Abuse
    Anxiety Disorders
  • Parent/Child Conflicts
  • Physical Abuse
Fees for counseling services are based on a sliding scale. NVCSS Counseling Staff is professionally trained. Counseling services are provided at all three of the sites.

The Family Support Program provides home visits and community based resources which focus on developing the strengths of the young or new parents so that they can become self-sufficient and provide healthy home environments for their children.

The Family Preservation Program is an intensive, 4-to-6 week, in-home program serving Shasta County residents who are at risk of having a child or children placed in out-of-home care.

The Independent Living Skills Program (ILS) serves youth, ages 16 to 19 years old, in foster care. Youth in Shasta, Tehama, and Butte counties receive the following services:

  • Vocational/Educational training
  • Tutorial assistance
  • Job training referrals
  • Financial workshops
  • Health and Nutrition workshops
  • Transportation

Laurel Glen (under development), Redding, will be a vocational/educational center for at-risk youth (17-25) to teach them the skills to needed be self-sufficient and employable.

The Foster Family Agency is a NVCSS licensed agency that certifies small family homes to provide foster care. In addition to certifying and training foster parents, the staff works closely with the foster parents, biological parents and the placing agency towards the goal of family reunification.

The Stillwater Learning Program provides support to persons with severe mental illnesses. Stillwater offers a variety of comprehensive services including job counseling, socialization and education, day rehabilitation and case management. The following programs help clients achieve and maintain their highest level of independent living skills:

  • Day program
  • Vocational program
  • Supported housing program
  • Community resource partnership program

The following programs are under the Adolescent Family Life Program (AFLP) umbrella:

  1. The Teenage Pregnancy and Parenting Program (TAPP) emphasizes service for teens, teen parents, and their families.
  2. The Cal Learn Program provides case management services for pregnant and parenting teens who receive AFDC, with the goal of helping the teens return to school and graduate with a high school diploma or GED.

Our Second Time Around thrift store helps support many of the agency's programs by reselling clean, usable donations of clothing, toys, furniture, and miscellaneous household items.

NVCSS belives that each person has unique attributes which enable him/her to help others. Individuals from the community who are willing to help the agency reach its goals are our most valuable resource. We think that volunteer assignments should reward individuals with opportunities to test and fine tune their skills and to share their interests and abilities with others.

Adopt-A-Family is an on-going program developed to aid low-income families during times of increased need such as at Christmas, Easter, Back to School, etc.

Relying on referrals from case workers, the Adopt-A-Family program assists individuals by offering unconditional support during these times that can be difficult emotionally and financially.
